Chicago Millennium Park Photowalk

Published by CLS under Class Photo Walks

During eBay Live 2008 a few eBay photographers (and walkers) gathered for a photowalk through the park.

Here’s one of my favorite photos from the day. It’s the cloud gate – an amazing piece of art that is a must see for visitors.

I’d love to have spent some time there doing a few shots early morning or late evening and turning them into HDR images – this is such an unusual subject.

World Wide Moment is a photography project which aims to let people around the world participate in a simultaneous moment of peace.  The concept is for people to take photographs simultaneously in celebration of this event.  The ultimate goal for World Wide Moment is two parts. 1) To prove that peace is possible around the world, even for one moment. 2) To display and expose everyone’s images and stores from the moment in galleries and online displays in order to create an international discussion, community, and hopefully intiate a positive change through the art of Photography.

The eBay Live Photo Walk Friday Morning

Published by CLS under Class Photo Walks

The eBay Live Photo Walk Friday Morning June 20th – 8:00 am

Join us on the first eBay Live Photo Walk.

How about the First Unofficial eBay Live Photo Walk? Want to join me on this free tour? I took my students out for a photo walk a few weeks ago and we had a ball! You’ll have  a chance to practice using your camera dials and functions.

What’s a Photo Walk? Wikipedia – describes “Photowalking is the act of walking with a camera for the main purpose of taking pictures of things you may find interesting.”
More about it at Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photowalking

It’s a pretty simple concept, but very effective. For you to become better (at anything, but especially photography) it takes practice. Spending an hour or two once in awhile looking at stuff and clicking the shutter can greatly improve your skills. My idea is that we’ll practice with our cameras and walk off some of those great meals we’re going to have while in Chicago.

I’ve hired a local photographer to guide us through the park and help us get a taste of Chicago. This event is free for you to attend.

Here are the details:

When: June 20th (Friday Morning)

Time: 8:00 – 9:00 am

Meet:  Millennium Park Chicago

201 E Randolph St

Chicago, IL 60601

“Fountain at Millennium Park” right on the corner of Randolph Street and Michigan Avenue

Google Map:

We’ll walk around the park for about an hour and take photographs. The Millennium tour is a pretty walk which affords lots of rest areas by way of park benches etc.. (But I believe it is something worth seeing as well–these outdoor sculptures are a major source of Chicagoans civic pride.

Visit www.millenniumpark.org for more information about this wonderful park.

Be sure to submit your photos of Millennium Park to our special eBay Photo Walk Flickr group at http://www.flickr.com/groups/ebayphotowalk

The best photo(s) will win an Easy Auction Photography Briefcase.

To return to the convention center there is a Metra (train) that runs from the station on Randolph and Michigan at 9:15 am and returns to McCormick Place at 9:22 – cost $2.15

More information about planning your trip to and from Millennium Park via Chicago Public Transit can be found here:

Photrade.com announces the first free photography website where users can share, protect and make money from their photos.

Cincinnati, OH (PRWEB) June 10, 2008 — Photrade.com (www.photrade.com) announces the first free photography website where users can share, protect and make money from their photos. The Photrade.com beta site–available now to select private users before its full, public rollout later this year–is designed to give photographers a comprehensive platform to consolidate everything a digital photographer needs, all in one convenient site.
“After many years of shooting, I realized that I needed a place for all my photos-but I also wanted to share, sell, print and protect all of them. I had to go to 5 different sites to do everything,” said Andrew Paradies, CEO of Photrade. “I needed one place that could do it all, so I created that place, and Photrade was born.”

Photrade.com has the most ways to make money from your own photos, for both professionals and hobbyists alike. You can sell stock, prints and merchandise and also make money through Photrade’s patent-pending AdcosystemTM. The AdcosystemTM provides free, ad-supported, legally-licensed images to online publications and blogs–and the photographer gets paid for every view, every time.

Photrade is developing as an emerging marketplace, one that gives more control to the photographer–allowing them to decide who, where and how the image is used and to be able to set a fair price for its usage.

“Photrade gives photographers a new way to support their livelihood,” said Paradies. “Also, with digital cameras constantly improving, amateurs are taking better photos. We want to give them a place to make money too, along with the pros.”

Photrade also provides users with unparalleled protection for their photos. The newest feature–custom watermarking–allows users to protect their photos and insures proper credit when the image is shared, helping to avoid image theft and copyright misuse.

“Photography is at a point where people are weary of seeing their images misused,” said Paradies. “They want to be able to share their creative output safely, and not have to pay a premium price for that protection. We created Photrade with that in mind.”

About Photrade.com
Photrade is the first free photography website where photographers can protect, share, and make money from their photos. Photrade creates an entire photo marketplace within one site, bringing sharing, selling prints, selling stock and providing free ad-supported legally licensed image content all under one domain.

Photrade is based in Cincinnati, OH and was founded by CEO Andrew Paradies in 2006. To schedule an interview with Andrew Paradies, or for more information, contact Krista Neher, VP Marketing at Krista @ photrade.com or via phone at 513-240-0549 or visit www.photrade.com/press.php for media resources

How To Get Amazing Blue Skies

Published by CLS under Photo Tips

One of the easiest things to do to get a deep blue sky with those beautiful white clouds is to use a polarizer filter.  A polarizer fits onto the end of your lens and has an adjustable ring that allows you to change the effect of the sky and clouds. Aim your lens at the spot you want to take and move the ring until you see what you like.

To get the most polarizing effect position your camera so the sun almost directly behind it. The most effect happens at about a 90 degree angle. However, even if the sun is not in the perfect position your pictures will still benefit from the polarizing effect. Whenever I shoot outdoors on a sunny day the filter is on to maximize those intense colors.

The new digital cameras require a different kind of polarizer than the traditional film cameras. This is one item that is not transferable to digital. If you have an older polarizer from your film camera it is a linear type and what is needed for digital is the circular type polarizer. Be sure to get the correct type for the medium you are using.

Polarizer filters are designed to fit onto lens of digital SLR cameras. If you have a point and shoot camera you, unfortunately will not find a filter to fit. If that’s the case you have a couple of tricks that may work to create the same effect. 1) Try shooting through your sunglasses. If they are clean you may get the effect. 2) Use Photoshop Elements to bring out the blue sky/white clouds later.

What you need:

  • Polarizer- buy the best available. Less expensive filters are not made of glass and will leave your final image less than tack sharp.

Another Tip For Night Photography

Published by CLS under Photo Tips

I just read this tip in the PopPhoto.com Weekly Newsletter

Around the campfire: “There’s a time in the day, right after the sun sets, when the level of light thrown by a fire equals the ambient light in the sky, this is the best time to get fireside photos. When shooting family and friends next to a fire, don’t worry about including the flames, just get the beautiful glow on their faces. And don’t use flash- it will destroy the mood. ”

Now I’m ready to go camping to try this new technique!
